Abstract

This paper consists of a discussion about the notions of “letters” and “literature”, built historically on literate continuities and literary discontinuities. It is therefore intended to better understand the specificities of literate practices of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries in Portugal and Portuguese America, so that these texts are not read out of time or only from a single temporal conception: that of literary modernity with its longings for rupture.
