The Cuban Fernando Ortiz developed a set of initiatives that consecrated him as a leading character of Latin American intellectual life. Fernando Ortiz opened new perspectives for the study of black people and interethnic relations by proposing unprecedented themes and interpretations, such as the concept of “transculturation.” In this text, we analyze how the cross-cultural perspective marks both his work and his action as a public intellectual. To do so, we will focus on his research on black people and transculturation, as well as on his action to combat racism and promote political solidarity and intellectual exchange in the Atlantic area.
