This article − written in a time rife with protest and conflict amidst the Brazilian sporting scenario − aims to review some episodes of striking tension and ideological bouts throughout the history of the Modern Summer Olympic Games. It seeks to challenge the perspective − endorsed by official speeches by the International Olympic Committee, among the organizers from a number of countries, and some from significant press outlets − according to which politics and sports must be kept apart in the name of the Olympic spirit. Reviewing those episodes shows that historical events reveal the recurrence of somewhat explicit political practices and confrontations.Downloads
