This article seeks to study the tense and ambivalent relationships established by Gilber to Freyre’s work with the sign “America”. On the one hand, we attempt to investigate how the initial perceptions created by the author of The Masters and the Slaves of the Brazilian and Nor th American cultures helped structure his famous interpretation of Brazil. On the other hand, we examine the way Freyre places Brazil in a lasting and old debate on the meaning of the two main civilizing projects existing in the Americas – the Anglo and Latin AmericasDownloads
