This paper discusses the causes and consequences of the present financial crisis. The causes pointed out are: deregulation and gigantic size of financial intermediation, world macroeconomic disequilibrium and asset price bubbles. The predicted consequences are: sharp increase in regulation of financial activities, increase in macroeconomic coordination, increased role of developing countries in world economic affairs and reduced importance of the US dollar as reserve currency of the world.Downloads
