This article addresses the scant critical literature on theater produced by Antonio Candido − certainly inspired by his being friends with Decio de Almeida Prado, our greatest Brazilian drama critic and historian − and it seeks to contextualize and comment on his production. Although Antonio Candido's writings on theater are not many, his privileged intelligence renders them interesting and important for understanding some aspects of our drama's history, mainly the drama produced in the 1940s and 1950s. The article also analyses texts written at a later time, especially those addressing the works by Jorge Andrade, a playwright from São Paulo.
