Gothic: fear and pessimism as drivers of literary creation

This text intends to examine the literary expression of Gothic from its origins in the 18th century, taking into account two perspectives: the historical, cultural and artistic phenomenon that, from that moment on and throughout the following century, overflowed from fiction to other areas; and Gothic as a specific poetics, which, after the exhaustion of formulas and themes established throughout the aforementioned period, began to provide the ideal framework for narratives anchored in fear and pessimism – emotions that inevitably result from the human experience in this world.
