THE USE OF THE INTERNET IN ELECTION CAMPAIGNS: BALANCE OF DEBATE AND SOME EVIDENCE ON BRAZIL

This article seeks to reflect on the use of new technologies in the latest Brazilian elections based on the results of our empirical research on internet use by the 406 senate and gubernatorial candidates of the elections of October 2010. The results reveal a pattern of web use different from what was seen in previous elections. The two basic characteristics are: 1) reduction of the “digital divide” between candidates of different regions of the country and a tendency to “normalization” of internet use among the candidates; 2) wide dissemination of the use of the so-called “social media” by the candidates, such as Twitter, Facebook and video postings on Youtube, which replaced the traditional online interaction mechanisms such as blogs, forums and chat rooms.
