Abstract

This text approaches the artistic production brought about by the modernist movement, both from the viewpoint of the exhaustion of academic tradition and the cultural change taking place then in Brazil, from the onset of the 20th century to the late 1920s. To do so, it works on questions such as the research on the national elements, the role of the city of São Paulo, and the formation
of the modernism through ne arts. In doing so it gives emphasis to the paths taken by artists based in the country, the in uence from Paris, and the contributions from expressionism. All of those elements helped structure the Brazilian modern language.
