The article discusses the complexity of metropolises from the viewpoint of social and urban processes; and emphasizes the makeup of several socially vulnerable groups and the impact of their conditions on health status, exposure to violence, experiences of discrimination, and some health-risk behaviors. The empirical study focused on the central area of the city (both the historic and expanded centers), where three par ticularly vulnerable groups dwell: the urban poor living in census tracts with moderate to very high social vulnerability, Bolivian immigrants and the homelessDescargas
