The theoretical and institutional trajectory of Franco Basaglia and his collaborators is reconstructed historically, with particular emphasis on key conceptssuch as madness, mentalillness, psychiatry and deinstitutionalization. It is proposed this school of thought should be considered not only in the context of a distinctive process of radicaltransformation in th e field of psychiatry, but also as workwich transcendsthe traditional epistemiological frontiers of mental health. It is hypothesized thatthis radical departure was possible because Franco Basaglia's criticai project was part of a broader process of reflection on the nature and function of the sciences, of knowledge, and of techinicians, wich is tanking place in the field of philosophy of science and of the not ion of complexity.
