The image of the world in the dispersion of the fragments: The red cavalry, by Isaac Babel

This paper develops a reading of The Red Cavalry (Cavalry Army, 1926), by Isaac Babel, focusing, specially, on the author’s language, the narrative structure, and the role performed by the narrator-protagonist and his trajectory of formation. Through the analysis of three short stories from Babel’s work (“Crossing the Zbruch”, “The rabbi’s son” and “Berestiechko”), some considerations are made on the representation of the epic matter, the general effect of paradox, conflict and shock, and finally the possibility of characterizing Babel’s book as a modernist novel.
