Ivan Turguêniev, "Living Relic", Russian peasantry , 19th centuryAbstract
The creation of literary types is one of the high points of Turgenev's work. The superfluous man and the radical youth are the most memorable examples of that. And just as impressive is the writer's portrait of the Russian peasant in A Sportsman's Sketches. Virtually all of the great Russian scholars of the 19th century addressed this issue. But Turgenev went much further. In this article, we will demonstrate, on the basis of an analysis of the short story “Living Relic”, the innovations introduced by the writer in his portrayal of this figure. Subordinating the narrative structure to the voice of a peasant woman and giving to her a hitherto unprecedented Christian character, Turgenev creates a very striking and moving figure.
