This proposal seeks to reveal some premises from which to study the idea of mass culture developed by Yuri Lotman. To do so, I will recover his notion of “aesthetics of identity”, early designed in order to describe the workings of canon-oriented texts, which tend to be interpreted with disdain as they exhibit regulated use of common places and clichés. However, for this semiotic theory, stereotypes will play an important cognitive process in cultures: they collaborate with the ordering of information and fixation in memory through simple but very effective schemes. With the current television series, I will verify the potential of the "aesthetics of identity": a productive category when it comes to putting heterogeneous texts in a dialogue situation and identifying their most representative operations, as well as a conception capable of recognizing the massive artistic forms as true laboratories that experiment with cultural senses.
