This article seeks to highlight some dimensions that comprehends the condition of being a foreigner based on the protagonist of the film Nostalgia (1983), by the Russian filmmaker Andriêi Tarkóvski. The reflections start, at first, from the same circumstance that the director experienced, mainly during the production of the film, when he was absent from Russia and traveled to Italy. In this sense, the trip is the bridge that locates the character Andriêi Gortchakóv, whose initial objective of his displacement gradually changes in the face of the contact with the “new world”. This experience will unleash, among other emotions, a feeling of nostalgia, that punishes him and, in its turn, transforms his experience into deep melancholy and incommunicability. The reading key presented will cover, above all, studies on the foreigner proposed in the texts by Machado and Pageaux (1988) and Julia Kristeva (1994).
