The present work aims to address the Russian Futurist avant-garde language; particularly, that of Cubo-Futurist group “Hylaea” or “Gileya” (Гилея), which will be briefly introduced to provide context for its production. It is based on the idea that the search for the new reached its peak in literary productions between 1912 and 1913. In these works, the language merges the image and sound of words, reducing the primacy of meaning. Hence, the works in the zaum language privilege the aspect of sound and music on one hand, and the aspect of image, graphic design and layout on the other. Both aspects disrupt the traditional way of perceiving a work. In this regard, Hylaea manifestos and programmatic texts will be analysed, as well as a number of poems and the play Victory over the Sun.
