This text focuses on some aspects of The Death of Ivan Ilych, analyzing them in dialogue with Kierkegaard’s The Sickness Unto Death. The Danish author understands the human being as a synthesis of the infinite and he finite (and their correlates) and from this derives both a specific meaning for the concept of despair (as loss of oneself), and a specific concept of faith (as overcoming despair). From then on, the character Ivan Ilyich will be analyzed in relation to the categories of Finitude’s despair and Despair that is ignorant of being despair. Finally, he will also be analyzed from the point of view of Consciousness of despair and from the point of view of faith. In this last part, some reflections will be developed based on the work A Confession, by Tolstoy.
