Abstract

The dual origin of Bioethics in 1971, with the publication of Potter's book “Bioethics: bridge to the future” and the creation of the Kennedy Institute by André Hellegers, is constantly cited in the literature. Potter's concept of Bioethics is described as broad and linked to an ecological vision, while Hellegers' notion is focused solely on health issues, representing an expanded form of medical ethics. The objective of this study was to explore and analyze the life and work of André Hellegers.  Hellegers was a Catholic medical scientist, engaged with the ethical and human challenges of his time, marked by significant social, cultural and medical changes. He sought to address the ethical dilemmas in healthcare with a medical, scientific and ethical approach. Rather than solely contributing to the theoretical field of Bioethics, he aimed to address the practical ethical dilemmas faced by physicians, patients and their families. Alongside this pragmatic approach, he drew upon the insights of prominent thinkers in Theology and Philosophy, as well physicians concerned with the humanistic aspects of medicine, to develop and refine his own bioethical framework, thereby fostering conditions for research, education and dissemination of the major themes in Bioethics.
