In this article we propose to investigate the origin of the audiovisual archives used in the documentary Retratos de identificação (2014), by Anita Leandro, which reconstitutes the story of four political militants during the Brazilian military dictatorship. The attention in the gesture of shooting, to the gaze of the one who held the camera to produce the testimonies in exile, led us to the filmmaker Luiz Alberto Sanz, also a political activist arrested, tortured and exiled. We searched the archives of the political police to find traces of the history of the filmmaker to better understand what these images keep from the eyes of those who frame them. What new senses gain these images and sounds produced in exile when reused in contemporary documentary cinema?
