This paper aims to reflect on two important features of American audiovisual culture of the 1980’s: the centrality of male adolescent figures and the nostalgia of the 1950’s. These features will be discussed through a comparative approach between the movies Back to the Future (Robert Zemeckis, 1985) and Blue Velvet (David Lynch, 1986), noting, among other things, the use that both of them make of the Sandman figure in lyrics of songs of their soundtracks. Thus, we seek to highlight the central role of these works in the careers of its directors, and suggest that there may be a stronger connection between these two influential films of the 1980’s.
