“Cinema é mais que filme”: uma história das Jornadas de Cinema da Bahia (1972-1978), by Izabel de Fátima Cruz Melo, casts light on the cultural circulations around this film fest during the dictatorship. The text renders a vivid picture of the interactions and tensions of this circuit, including the promotion of short film local production; the screening of movies coming from other regions; the filmmaker’s agendas; the disputes involving the use of different film stocks (35 mm, 16 mm, super 8); and the problems with the official censorship. A decentered gaze is one of the main outcomes of this work, since it unveils alternative horizons of the history of cinematic practices in Brazil.
