Lavoisier's chemical nomenclature was systematized based on the Logic of Condillac, and both authors were inspired by John Locke. Lavoisier persistently attacked the phlogiston theory until its demise, and he succeeded in getting the support of several scientists to his oxygen theory. The use of the new chemical nomenclature implied acceptance of that theory. He wrote several works, including Methode de nomenclature chimique and Traité élémentaire de chimie, which spread the new chemical nomenclature throughout Europe. Assuming that science is a cultural product, we present a discussion in light of the works of Ludwik Fleck and Thomas Kuhn.Downloads
