Abstract

This essay interprets the brazilian literary historiography from the conception proposed by Silvio Romero, Araripe Jr. e José Veríssimo also considering the ecletism o f the modern critics like Mário de Andrade e Tristão de Athayde, until the historical synthesis that Otto Maria Carpeaux and Antonio Candido presented us in their works. Alfredo Bosi thinks these two last critics give us the basis for a new historiography in which the sym bolic expressions are open for larger cultural and existential dimensions
