Homem cordial e suas fardas: os fracassos da modernidade em "Triste fim de Policarpo Quaresma"

Abstract

The article deals with the military world as represented in the novel Triste Fim de Policarpo Quaresma. Based on the assumption that modern society is characterized by the principles of legality, functionality and impersonality, it analysis the uniform as a metonymy of the new order pursued by the partisans of the Republic. However, its modern façade is not enough to conceal the practices and costumes of the old imperial era.
