We present, in this article, some reflections about a very specific excerpt taken from the lyrical narrative built in O Uraguay (1769), by José Basílio da Gama: the suicide of Lindóia, which happens at the end of Chant IV in the poem. Without intending to belittle the historical contextual richness and the remarkable body of critical work already produced about Basílio da Gama’s major work, our analytical efforts are concentrated here on some of the many aspects surrounding Lindóia’s voluntary death, aiming at establishing a dialogue with other literary and artistic works, besides a dialogue with theoretical studies on suicide.
