O Uraguai como fonte: A constituição do mito de Sepé Tiaraju

Abstract

The article aims to examine the literary trajectory of the Guarani Indian Sepé Tiaraju, who died in 1756 as a result of the Guarani War. This war took place in the Missions, a region of Rio Grande do Sul, as a result of the Treaty of Madrid, an agreement between the Portuguese and Spanish crowns that aimed a land exchange in the southern region of South America. The character of O Uraguai, epic poem of Basilio da Gama, Sepé, throughout the twentieth century, becomes the protagonist of poems and novels of many literary works from Rio Grande do Sul, by João Simões Lopes Neto, Manoelito de Ornellas, Erico Verissimo, Fernandes Barbosa and Alcy Cheuiche, which will be analyzed here.
