The crisis caused by the 1755 earthquake revealed the leadership capacity of the future Marquis of Pombal, affirming him as the decisive figure of the Reign of D. José I (1750-1777) in the process of reconstructing Lisbon and of providing political reforms, considering the Society of Jesus as an adversary to be terminated, which he would eventually expel in 1759. This paper considers these two great media events of the Century of Enlightenment in Portugal and seeks to analyze their interrelationship, meanings and consequences that led to the reconfiguration of different fields of the Portuguese physical, social and cultural landscape.
