Abstract

E.T.A. Hoffmann wrote many texts dealing with the figure of the ingenious artist and his confrontation with German bourgeois society of the early 19th century. As we see in “My Cousin’s Corner Window” (1822), the tricky question of art versus world leads to different ways of perceiving and interpreting “reality”, and this unsettles the very notion of literature being capable of representing reality.
