Abstract

In this text, I try to probe and to prune the meanings given by Brazilian critics (of the 1930s) to the word “damned” in Verlaine. For such, I apply the bias of critical fortune and the poetic sampling of Gilka Machado (1893-1980), approaching them to the critical fortune and the poetic work of Marceline Desbordes-Valmore (1786-1856), the only “damned” woman indicated by Verlaine.
