Abstract

The present research analyzes the film adaptation of the manga Ghost in the Shell, by Masamune Shirow, directed by Mamoru Oshii. Considering adaptation as an /act of (re-)interpretation and (re)creation (Hutcheon, 2011) and based on the concept of interpretants (Venuti, 2007), we sought examine in what ways the formal and thematic interpretants applied in Oshii’s animation affected the depiction of themes present in Shirow's manga. The analysis shows that both the approach adopted by the director and the changes made to the characterization of the characters resulted in an adaptation with a much more serious tone, suggesting a more critical stance in relation to the theme of the implications of technological advances for our conception of humanity in comparison to its source material.
