The Hours: adapting Virginia Woolf for the common reader

Daldry’s The Hours (2003), a film adaptation of Michael Cunningham’s eponymous novel, was a big hit at the time of its release and earned actress Nicole Kidman an Oscar. However, it is not widely known that the movie in fact represents a double adaptation process – while one comes upfront, the other remains somewhat concealed. That is because Cunningham’s book is itself an adaptation: he drew on several works by Virginia Woolf in order to write it, namely the novel Mrs. Dalloway, but also her letters and diaries. We aim to focus on the unique adaptation processes used by Cunningham in The Hours to shape his “concealed adaptation”, concentrating on the intersections between adaptation theory and literary theory that made it possible to bring the modernist writer Virginia Woolf once again to the common reader’s attention.
