Abstract

In discussing Walter Benjamin’s and Jacques Derrida’s translation theories in contrast with Oswald de Andrade’s concept of ‘cultural anthropophagy’, this essay intends to re-consider the semiosis found in drama translation, probing the possibilities of inter- and multicultural re-creations in a perspective that enables the establishment of some new criteria for the assessment of translation as such. For this purpose, we draw upon the work of authors from various countries, whose plays were staged in Portuguese by the Brazilian street-thatre troupe ‘Grupo Galpão’. The theatre constitutes an appropriate example for our stance in this article, since it is a multiple phenomenon of sign systems that does not describe, define or explain its reference, but rather actualizes and exposes it.
