Abstract

This study aims to demonstrate the importance of the cross-cultural adaptation in scientific texts mainly in health questionnaires. To do so, we used some items of the “SWAL-QOL – Quality of Life in Swallowing Disorders” questionnaire (Felipini 2016) and their respective translations, synthesis and final, in order to exemplify the situations in which the adaptation to the target public is extremely relevant. The analyzed items were classified as “non-equivalent” by at least one of the members of the committee of experts, concerning the experimental and conceptual equivalences. The theoretical basis of this study covers concepts in the fields of both translation and health care. It was possible to demonstrate that translation is a process of negotiation between cultures, according to Bassnett (2003).
