The text presents the special edition “Legitimation and legitimacies” which aimed to contribute to the contemporary debates on legitimacy and to the theoretical, methodological and empirical issues still under debate in the study of this topic. From an overview of the main sociological developments of the discussion on legitimacy, we discuss the articles of the special edition, organized around two main themes: (i) the legitimacy of scientific and academic knowledge in contemporary society; and (ii) the relationships between legitimacy, domination and obedience.
