Abstract

Researches show that phantom pain in amputee patients may express a body reintegration attempt since the amputation may change the body image, modifying the individual sense of integrity. On this way, this paper points out the body reintegration’s stages in this patients and the importance to avoid the intense use of denial as a defense mechanism in the process of mourning due the physical lost. It’s concluded that even though body reintegration appears as one of the phantom pain function, it may be a no productive alternative in the process of global rehabilitation of the amputee.
