Abstract

Stroke victims presentwith a high energetic consumption during the motor activities most of the times and, despite the evidences of this post stroke deficiency, few authors have investigated the effects of aerobic training. Objective: To assess the effects of an aerobic training in functional capability and quality of life (QOL) in people with chronic impairment following stroke. Methods: Two participants were assessed, one man and one woman, recruited from Newton Paiva University clinic school, in Belo Horizonte/MG. The functional capability was assessed by the Six Minutes Walk Test and the perception of QOL by the Nottingham Health Profile instrument (NHP). Evaluations were performed before the intervention and repeated within the 10th, 20th, 30th and 40th sessions. Results and Discussion: The reduction both in the distance and in the walk velocity are in general associated with changes in balance, muscle weakness and physical deconditioning. In the present study the distance walked by both participants has increased, suggesting improvement in the functional capability. A reduction in the score of the NHP has also been noticed, which suggests a better quality of life after the rehabilitation protocol. Conclusion: The participants of the study increased their functional capability and altered in a positive way their perception of QOL after the aerobic training program. To generalize these results to people with sequels of a stroke in a chronic phase studies with a bigger sample are necessary.
