Abstract

The evaluation of the functional capacity (FC) in the elderly can detect the possible risk of later dependence, establish levels of morbidity and mortality, as well as give important directions to interventions for the aged. Thus, the aim of this study was, through a literature review, to identify the most frequently used tests, and the potential of each test to identify the elderly FC status. The literature review showed that FC has been assessed by general tools, which delineate the functional profile through a single test, such as the walking and mobility tests. On the other hand, the FC can be established by the evaluation of specific components, such as the balance, strength and gait tests. Generally, the described proposals follow the idea that a functional action, performed as fast as possible, reflects the elderly functional potential. However, because of the quantification limitations shown by the studies, a trend has been observed in FC evaluation of using the qualitative analysis, which aims at establishing the movement pattern, as an additional method to understand the FC of the elderly. Moreover, it was noticed that the evaluation of FC has been indicated and also developed for those who do not present apparent functional.
