Abstract

The high incidence of occupational diseases is a public health problem that carries a high economic and social cost. There is evidence that occupational diseases are determined by several factors associated with work structure as well as psycho-social factors. There are few occupational rehabilitation services and their results are rarely evaluated. This study examines the relationship among clinical factors, demographics, and psycho-social factors, and the return to work in a population of 425 workers attended by an occupational rehabilitation service. This research is a documented, cross-sectional study done on a random sample based on the registry of these workers who attended an occupational rehabilitation service between November, 2007 and September, 2008. Data was analyzed using SPSS-14 and STATA statistical programs. Descriptive statistical analyses (mean, SD (standard deviation), C/C) were used to characterize the group and the Chi-square, the t-test, ANOVA, and multiple logistical regressions were used to compare the groups and examine the bio-psycho-social variables predicting a return to work. Results suggest that, in terms of age, gender, intensity of pain, location of pain, and time on sick leave, there were no significant differences between those workers who attended and then returned to work and those who did not return. On the other hand, factors such as seniority, salary, degree of disability, and depression contributed to the non-return to work. These results are not only supported in the literature, but clinically they make sense and are significant in the ambit of prevention and treatment.
