Departing from the manifestations against police brutality targeting racialized people as the background for this essay, art historian Darby English focuses on a single painting by Kerry James Marshall, Untitled (policemen), from 2015, offering, as an analytical method, the painstaking description of its formal elements, such as the pose of the figure on the foreground, its costume, the colors, as well as other details from the scene. Highlighting, therefore, the ambiguities and the irresolution held by the artist through the picture, the author elaborates on crucial issues regarding the current system of representation in art and contemporary culture.
