Abstract

The modernist novel had drastically reduced the spatial and social construction of characters. Maria Velho da Costa’s fiction, however, tried to react to that constriction through the exploration of new forms of construction of narrative identity and spatial description. The excursuses scattered throughout Casas Pardas are, for this reason, particularly important.
