Abstract

This article approaches the transnational and diasporic relationships and links of the Cuban community in Canada, in order to understand the articulations between the long-standing migratory processes (half a century of the 1959 Revolution), which configure a Cuban “migratory culture”, and the media and communication transformations that enable a transnational way of life. Based on an ethnographic-inspired research carried out between 2019 and 2021, we highlight the asymmetries, differences and vulnerabilities that structure the migratory experience of Cubans, highlighting the constant elaboration of new bonds, and the conformation of other subjectivities; especially in the current context of densification of human and digital flows. Foucault's concept of heterotopia is used to define: a) the elaboration of spaces for remaking the identity of Cubans living in Canada today (the bonds that are formed in a restaurant, the production of messages in social networks and the tattoos found on the body of a migrant); and b) an attitude of openness to the effects that fieldwork interactions can generate in the process of mapping affective bonds in cross-border flows.
