BIM of Gustavo Capanema Palace 1937-1945
for digital preservation of modern heritage

Digital technologies are more and more integrated into data models that allow the creation of reliable models, increasing the possibilities offered for architects and the access to cultural assets. Those technologies such as digital surveys and BIM platform (Building Information Modeling) has become an important instrument for digital preservation of architectural heritage. Thus, BIM model of built heritage or HBIM (Historic or Heritage BIM) represents an important alternative for preserving memory, serving as the basis for maintenance, intervention and facilities management. In this sense, this paper presents the challenges and oppportunities offered by BIM for preservation of the architectural heritage, with emphasis on modern heritage. Aiming at this, a BIM model of an important reference for Brazilian architecture has been constructed: the Gustavo Capanema Palace, located in Rio de Janeiro. There is presented the digital reconstruction of this building considering the timeline from 1937-1945. The model is public accessed through an app, bringing together historical, constructive and chronological aspects in a single parameterized model. Results demonstrate the possibilities offered by BIM platform not only for new construction but particularly for historic buildings.
