This work is part of an ongoing research project by the author entitled "The 360° immersive experience: investigation, representation and digital immersion in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the 19th and 20th centuries", developed in Programa de Pós-Graduação em Urbanismo, Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This essay investigates the Panorama of Rio de Janeiro by the painters Victor Meirelles de Lima (1832-1903) and Henri Charles Langerock (1830-1915) exhibited in Brussels, in 1888, Paris, in 1889 and in Rio de Janeiro, in 1891. The present work analyzes in detail the remaining original studies of this Panorama; it estimates the points of view two painters' location in the historic city of Rio de Janeiro; it develops an interpretation of the old circular 360° image of this Panorama; and finally, it will be create a 360° immersive virtual experience which alludes to the original pictorial-spatial experience suggested to visitors to its exhibitions. In order to achieve these goals, computer graphics techniques are used as: freehand drawings, paintings and historical photographs, maps, geometric models, computer-generated imagery, game engines, videos and animations.
