Abstract

The present work aims at discussing some managerial problems regarding to design process of metallic structures in building construction, focusing the initial phases of design development. As a tool of process analysis, interviews were conducted with design offices which are specialized in metallic structures, in the Belo Horizonte area. Other agents dealing with buildings that use metallic structures (design coordinators and contractors) were also interviewed, since they also influence the process of metallic structures in building construction. The work points out some problems and drawbacks related to the design process: later choice of metallic structure systems, later contracting of designers, lack of briefing information for design development and deficient information flow between designers and general contractors. Based on this analysis, some guidelines are outlined in order to improve the design process quality. Key-words: metallic construction; design process; design procurement; preliminarly definitions
