Experiences called “autonomies” have emerged in several countries in Latin America, either as a result of political struggles that led to constitutional agreements (Bolivia, Nicaragua), or as a result of demands “from abajo”, as in the case of Mexico, where the indigenous peoples and peasant communities themselves have demanded the condition of autonomy for municipalities or regions, eliminating the need for State recognition. These experiences involve the maintenance or reestablishment of self-government and may include the creation or strengthening of systems of justice, community education and health, food sovereignty, etc. The article presents the dossier that brings together articles by researchers dedicated to analyzing these autonomic processes in Brazil and Mexico. The objective is to deepen exchanges between anthropologists from these two countries about their autonomy, their lived worlds and their theoretical and practical proposals, some of which have achieved wide resonance in the Latin American public debate.
