Maria Manuela Ligeti Carneiro da Cunha nasceu em Portugal – seus pais, húngaros e judeus, foram para lá pouco antes da guerra – e veio para São Paulo aos 11 anos. Entrou na USP no curso de Física, mas foi no mesmo ano para Paris, onde acabou fazendo a graduação em Matemática. Na década de 1960, freqüentou os seminários de Claude Lévi-Strauss, o que a inspirou a realizar pesquisa entre os índios Krahó do Brasil Central.Downloads
