Abstract

This article analyzes the history of colonial conquest of Mato Grosso state in the XIXth century and its counterparty, the indigenous resistance. It starts with written by militaries and administrators who acted in the Paraguay River area and Swampland (reports that were published in scientific magazines of the XIXth century). The case of the Guaicurus and Guanas is strategic for that theoretical concern, since these two groups had an important role in the consolidation of the Portuguese colonial conquest. At the same time, they created several obstacles to its expansion and stabilization. The article presents a historical and theoretical reflection about the relationship between domination and political resistance.
