Abstract

Girls’ Participation in intramural games under 12 in São Paulo: Decline of interest or barriers increase?This article aimed to analyze how the School Games of the State of São Paulo-JEESP, in the pre-child category, have contributed to foster female participation as a way of promoting intrinsic motivation and expanding the chances of adherence and adherence of students for the practice of physical activity throughout life. To this end, a survey was carried out with triangulation of methods, based on data from the statistical tables of the JEESP, in a section of the last fi ve years (2015-2019), with analysis of the context of physical edu-cation and educational quality, and the impact on promotion of intrinsic motivation. The results showed: a) a lower participation of girls in relation to boys in all modalities in the fi ve years; b) gradual reduction in female participation over the years; c) increase in female participation in individual modalities in situations of extreme decrease in the number of total participants in the category; d) increased female participation over the years in collective futsal and handball modalities. Thus, it was concluded that: i) the State needs a policy of promoting physical activity to public school students more effectively and to be promoted in longitudinal progression to overcome the barriers faced; ii) according to the results, new investigations need to be carried out to assess the reasons for the possible loss of interest of students and/or teachers of school physical education-EFE in participating in school competitions in different modalities; iii) the JEESP have not functioned as a public policy action to promote the students' intrinsic motivation to be physically active in adulthood
