Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of recreational soccer on the functionality and executive functions of the elderly. Fifteen elderly subjects aged 65,7 ± 3,4 years and body mass index 26,7 ± 3,7 kg/m2 were selected. The participants were divided into two groups: intervention group(IG) and control group(CG), IG performed the practice of recreational soccer twice a week in 12 weeks. Before and after the intervention period, executive function evaluations (mental flexibility, working memory and decision making) were performed by the Span tests of digits, test tracks and Iowa Gambling Task and Functionality evaluation by Senior Battery Fitness Test. For the comparison of the groups, the two-way Anova two way of repeated measures with the Bonferroni post-hoc was used. The level of significance was p≤0.05. After 12 weeks of intervention, there was a significant intergroup difference in the agility / dynamic balance in IG (p = 0,050) and intragroup in lower limb flexibility in the CG (p=0,013). Despite promoting improvement in five components of physical fitness, the practice of recreational football in the elderly modified significantly only in dynamic balance/agility, showing no effect on executive functions.
