Abstract

This article aims to compare two residences designed by João Batista Vilanova Artigas in Curitiba: Bettega- Portela Residence (1949-1952) and Niclevicz-Bertoldi Residence (1975-1978). The analysis is based on formal and contextual criteria in order to understand any changes and continuities in the architect’s work. Formal criteria are based on the methods of authors such as Peter Eisenman, Charles Jencks and Anthony Viedler. The context appeals for the historiography of private life, in order to relativize the understanding of factors such as hygiene, comfort, convenience and the idea of residence.
